Aligarh Muslim University Association Riyadh (AMUOBA RIYADH) organized “Sir Syed Day” in Riyadh on a grand scale as usual. Renowned and fearless journalist Ms. Urfa Khanum Sherwani (The Wire) attended the event as a special guest. While Indian hockey team former captain, Arjuna awardee and Padma Shri Zafar Iqbal attended as guest of honour.
Addressing a gathering of former students and representatives of various social organizations in Riyadh, Urfa Khanum said that taking away the freedom of the people in a democracy is killing democracy. He said that the first condition of democracy is equality. Injustice to a single class is equal to injustice to the whole nation. Urfa Khanum said that it is not possible for India’s political power to deport the country’s largest minority. But she is taking a successful step in demoralizing them and keeping them in mental slavery. Muslims should protect themselves from this strategy of sectarians. He said that at the time of partition, Muslims were assured of their security in Gandhi’s India and not in Jinnah’s Pakistan. This was proof of the complete faith of the Muslims in the Constitution of India. Expressing regret, he said that a large section of the country’s population, called Dalits, is still struggling to get the status of a human being. This consciousness was awakened in them by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar.
Urfa said that government agencies have surrendered to a certain ideology. Today, those exercising their right to freedom of speech are paying the price of truth. The unfortunate thing is that we are imposing oppressors by giving our votes.

Urfa Khanum said that a wrong concept has become common among us that we have started to consider it as Main Stream media which is not the media but which is the spokesperson of a particular ideology. The media should be the right and voice of the people, not the slave of any power. If the media is free, then the country is free.
Mrs. Sherwani said that today we are united here in terms of knowledge. This is Sir Syed’s religion. Who did not take up arms but pen in the worst of circumstances?
